Bob F. Kuhn (1920 - 2007)
Earning a reputation as a leading painter of animals, painter Bob F. Kuhn would further distinguish himself with his ability to accurately depict his subjects in motion. Working in acrylic on Masonite he would apply both the Realist and Impressionist styles to his work.
Born in Buffalo, New York in 1920 his first experiences of the creatures he would soon paint were at the Buffalo Zoo. He was fascinated by animals from his earliest years and after completing his commercial art studies at the Pratt Institute, took up work as an illustrator for such publications as Field and Stream and Outdoor Life.
Kuhn would serve as a merchant seaman during World War II, and other than that period, he would work consistently from 1940 to 1970. In addition to his magazine work he began painting images for the Remington Arms Company, which were used in their Game Art Calendar, from 1964 to 1970.
From 1970 and on he resigned from all commercial pursuits and devoted himself entirely to easel painting. He took painting excursions to Africa, Alaska and Canada as well as the American West to find subject matter. In 2001 the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming held a retrospective exhibiting works from Kuhn’s sixty years of work.
