Antoine Bouvard (1870 - 1956)
A strong background in architecture and city design allowed the painter Antoine Bouvard to capture the remarkable beauty of Venice in his many paintings of the city. Born in 1870, Bouvard was formally educated in both art and architecture at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
He went on to great acclaim as a Director of the Architectural Services for the Seine in Paris, where he worked on the design and construction of the Boulevard Mourland and the Bourse du Travail.
In his free time Bouvard would take painting trips to Venice, Italy, where he met the Venetian painter Felix Ziem. It is Ziem who is credited with influencing Bouvard’s work for the rest of his career.
Like his mentor, Bouvard had a deep affection for Venice and would work to portray its beauty and peaceful charm through well designed and beautifully lit paintings. Many credit his architectural training for allowing him to capably capture the lines of the buildings, while his art training and love of the city are credited to his capacity for accurately depicting the remarkable way light reflects off of the water and surfaces of any Venetian scene.
Some of his most well-known works are famous locations, such as the Santa Maria Della Salute and the Grand Canal, but others are simpler scenes of the city, including his many “Vue de Venise” paintings of the less popular “back waters”.
Bouvard found professional success during his lifetime and exhibited in both France and Italy, as well as other European venues. His work is still collected today, especially by fans of Venetian scenes and landscapes.
